Upto 2,000 fans to be able to attend the WTA Prague Open

The Prague Open will be one of the first WTA events to take place when the tour resumes in August and organisers have said that up to 2,000 fans will be able to attend the new WTA event in Prague. The event is scheduled to take place from August 10 to August 15th as of now, according to The Hindu.

Tournament Director David Trunda commented, “We are already in talks with the top Czech players. We will prepare mobile stands with a capacity of 2,000 seats."

Tournament spokesman Karel Tejkal said this is a new event on the calendar and not a postponed version of the Prague Open which was scheduled in May earlier and not held due to the tour suspension. “It’s a new tournament which... has become part of the WTA’s provisional calendar for this year."

Czech Tennis Association head Ivo Kaderka commented, “The WTA was looking for places and organisers to prepare a quality tournament fast in these strange times. We have capitalised on references we had gained owing to the first tournament of the post-coronavirus era, which was played on Sparta courts and which turned out a success.”

Organizers are hoping that several of the top Czech women on the WTA Tour will compete in the event. World No. 3 Karolina Pliskova is the top ranked Czech woman on the WTA Tour, followed by two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, who is ranked No. 12 in the world currently but has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the past.

The professional men's and women's tennis tours have been on hold since mid-March due to the global pandemic and the tours are set to resume in August as per the latest information. The first WTA event after the resumption is scheduled to be held in Palermo from August 3rd. The US Open is scheduled to be held in New York at the end of August. Several players, currently based in Europe during the lockdown, have expressed their concerns about travelling to the United States in the current scenario and it remains to be seen how many eventually end up playing the event.
