Grigor Dimitrov to play US Open, unsure about Western and Southern Open

Grigor Dimitrov will be playing the 2020 US Open. The world no. 19 reportedly will travel to New York on Thursday, 20th August.

The Bulgarian, however, is as yet undecided about playing the Western and Southern Open that starts the coming week. He is expected to take a decision about playing the Masters 1000 event upon his arrival in New York.

Earlier, during his participation in Patrick Mouratoglou’s Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) event in July, Dimitrov had mentioned his tentativeness about travelling to play in Flushing Meadows this year. “I don’t know if I am going to be able to recover that quickly in order for me to fly again, and I have to put my body through a really rigorous regime again… I want to say it’s ambitious for me to go play but I am just really not sure how my body is going to respond,” Dimitrov had said.

But he had also added that he would do his best to get into shape ahead of playing in the US. “I am going to keep on practising, keep on seeing where my physicality is going to take me and hopefully, I have also a good mentality to go through (it) as well,” Dimitrov had noted.

The 29-year-old who tested positive for Covid-19 during the Adria Tour exhibition organised by Novak Djokovic, played the UTS after completing the treatment protocol of self-isolation. Apart from Dimitrov, a few other players had tested positive for Covid-19 including the Adria Tour creator and world no. 1 Djokovic, and his wife Jelena.

Djokovic, too, is playing the two events at Flushing Meadows. The three-time US Open champion was undecided about playing the American swing before committing to the events. Djokovic, who was forced to retire mid-match in his quarter-final match against Stan Wawrinka at the 2019 US Open, is seeking his 18th Slam title at the Major this year.

Grigor Dimitrov, meanwhile, beat Wawrinka’s compatriot and five-time US Open champion Roger Federer in their quarter-final match for the first time in his career, en route to reaching his first semi-final at the Major.
