Roland Garros: no derogation from the limit of 5000 crowd limit

With the US Open approaching, another Grand Slam event is working to ensure all fans have a show worthy of its name. This is the Roland Garros, which in the months of full lockdown caused a lot of talk for the sudden decision to change the tournament start date without consulting the organizers of other events around the world and scheduled for the same weeks.

FFT president Bernard Giudicelli had thus explained the reasons for the decision. He said: "We took a difficult but courageous decision in an unprecedented situation, which evolved suddenly. We are acting responsibly."

Roland Garros, there will be no derogation from the limit of 5000 spectators

The French Tennis Federation has been committed from the outset to ensure access to the famous Parisian Slam courts for the greatest number of spectators. On this very point, bad news has come for the tournament organizers. In an interview with France Inter, the prime minister reiterated that there will be no derogation from the previous decision taken.

Roland Garros, for the moment, is therefore not authorized to host more than five thousand spectators a day in the red zones. The limit of five thousand people will therefore comply with the regulations indicated for high turnout events in the places considered most at risk by the authorities.

"The five thousand ceiling can still be revised downwards and in the worst cases the authorities reserve the right to return to impose closed doors in the stadiums and in all entertainment venues," explained the prime minister.

The FFT had moved the tournament just to be guaranteed an adequate number of entries through the presence of the public, but at this point it will have to review its plans. In the next few hours there will be an important meeting between the representatives of the French government and the organizers of Roland Garros. The objective of the FFT is, of course, to have a greater number of daily admissions guaranteed.

Meanwhile, with the US Open draws, we can see all the players absents from New York. They are:  Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Gael Monfils, Fabio Fognini, Stan Wawrinka, Nick Kyrgios, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Lucas Pouille, Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Nicolas Jarry. Ashleigh Barty, Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina, Andreescu, Kiki Bertens, Belinda Bencic, Wang Qiang, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Saisai Zheng, Julia Goerges, Barbora Strycova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Fiona Ferro, Lin Zhu, Yafan Wang, Anastasia Potapanova and Samantha Stosur.

Among the stars there will be Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem, Serena Williams, Sofia Kenin, Petra Kvitova and Karolina Pliskova. Naomi Osaka's, who withdrawn from the Western and Southern Open for a hamstring injury, is in doubt.
