Borna Coric: My season is over, it was unpredictable and difficult year
Top-ranked Croatian tennis player Borna Coric has announced that his 2020 season is officially over as he now plans to take a few days off and already start preparing for the next season.
Coric, ranked at No. 23 in the world, made his maiden final of the season in St. Petersburg, where he for the second consecutive year ended runner-up at the tournament.
After making the St. Petersburg final, Coric ended his season with two early round exits as in Vienna he lost in the round-of-16, before losing in the second round at last week's Paris Masters.
"The 2020 season is over for me. It was an unpredictable and difficult year for the entire world. I am extremely grateful the tennis tour was able to continue during the hard times, I hope the events brought some positivity to the fans around the world. Thank you to those who worked hard to make the events possible. I will now rest for a few days and then start preparing for next season. Thank you as always for all your support, it really means a lot," Coric said in a statement posted on his Facebook page.
Coric said his expectations once were unrealisticCoric, 23, had a stunning start to his career as he beat Rafael Nadal in Basel six years ago and that led to many tipping him as the next big star.
"I haven’t felt any additional pressure, I am being honest here – the only pressure I feel is when I look at myself in the mirror, I need to know that I have done everything in my power to be the best that I can be. But still, you get used to hearing that you are the best, that you are the next Novak or the next Federer – then my expectations have become unrealistic thinking I was going to be top 10 quickly, but it doesn’t work that way," Coric exclusively told Tennis Majors last month.
Going forward, Coric thinks being aggressive is the key to his success.
"I am a far better player when I am being aggressive, not just retrieving, even though I am perhaps making a bit more errors. You could see that on display in New York and me being aggressive, along with further improvement of my serve, are two of the biggest emphasis of my work with Martin. I am not there yet, but if I am healthy and able to maintain the level I had at the US Open, then I can get close to Top 10. But it’s still a long way to go," Coric claimed.
