Martina Navrátilová against Novak Djokovic and the PTPA

2020 was a very complex year for everyone and in the world of tennis it was especially for world number one Novak Djokovic. The Serbian started the season in a great way with victories before the ATP Cup and then at the Australian Open, but at the best he saw the season stop due to the COVID-19 Global Pandemic.

During this, he was the protagonist of some quite controversial episodes such as the decision to organize the Adria Tour exhibition tournament, a tournament that led to an outbreak of Covid in the tennis world and a lot of criticism to the Serbian champion. This, but not only for the tennis player who, after winning the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, was disqualified at the US Open for having mistakenly hit a line judge when the game was stopped.

An unfortunate gesture but one that has brought several new criticisms especially among his detractors to the champion winner of 17 Grand Slam tournaments. In addition to this, Djokovic has left the Tennis Council and was the main proponent of the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), an association of new tennis players that has led to new criticism.

Martina Navratilova and the criticisms of Novak Djokovic

Women's tennis legend Martina Navratilova recently shared some criticism on world number one Novak Djokovic for choosing to create the PTPA and even advised him to invest his energies in tennis.

Here are his statements with The Irish Times: "Novak thinks he's doing the right thing, he doesn't agree with me but it's his choice. It just doesn't seem like something that helps the tennis world. From a logical standpoint, if you are a great tennis champion, when you engage in this sport you focus only on helping out. Creating this association is not useful at any level. Furthermore, these things must be done when you stop playing tennis and not now, when we are in the Covid period and dividing further only creates further damage. We think about solving problems and don't create new ones with things that we don't really need."

Novak Djokovic is playing the ATP Rolex Paris Masters, in Paris-Bercy, last ATP Masters 1000 event of this strana tennis season. After Paris, Nole will move to London, for the ATP Finals, where he will try to break the title record he now shares with Roger Federer.
