Roger Federer: 'I wonder who’s the person who is counting...'

After more than a year of stoppage, Roger Federer could return to the field in Doha from 8 to 13 March for the ATP 250 in Qatar. To support him, with knowledge of the facts but without officiality, is Richard Krajicek, former Wimbledon champion today director of the Rotterdam tournament, a traditional indoor event that will take place this year the week before that of Qatar. "I think Roger will play in Doha, the week after Rotterdam," Krajicek said. "But if he's actually fit and ready to play, he'll have to tell us." In Rotterdam, meanwhile, Rafa Nadal has confirmed his presence, returning to Holland after 12 years of absence: should Federer decide to anticipate his debut, it would be a big party at the Abn-Amro Arena. Federer won three times in Doha: in 2005 against his current coach Ivan Ljubicic, in 2006 against Gael Monfils, and in 2011 against Nikolay Davydenko.

Federer withdrew from the 2021 Australian Open

Recently, the 20-time Grand Slam winner had a conversation with the representatives of Moet & Chandon, one of the many brands he endorses. Moet & Chandon is one of the world’s largest champagne producers and a prominent champagne house. During the conversation, Roger was talking about an interesting statistic with regard to hitting 2 million serves in his life so far, and he revealed an interesting point. Roger Federer explained: “I have definitely not hit 2 million serves in my life. I don’t think my shoulder would survive that. I feel though that I may have hit 2 million shots in my life. With all the practices as a junior, doubles you name it. Maybe I’ve hit 2 million shots. But I wonder who’s the person who is counting all the bubbles in the glass. You take a slow-motion video and for how long and how difficult that must be. I don’t even know.” With 10 months spent with the coronavirus around the world, we are still not out of it. Thus, the biggest sporting event of the year, the Tokyo Olympics 2021, might be called off. For the Swiss maestro Roger Federer, this could be the end of his Olympic Gold quest. Presently, Japan is in a state of emergency as the pandemic outbreak hit them recently. If the situation gets better, the event might begin as scheduled on July 23. However, this looks unlikely from every angle. A report even suggested that the Japanese government has privately canceled the event and is looking to book a place in 2032. Therefore, the 39-year-old Federer’s dream of over 20 years of winning an Olympic gold might remain unfulfilled.
