Roger Federer’s Olympic gold quest could be hindered

Roger Federer will turn 40 next August and it would be useless to reiterate that the epilogue of his career is now getting closer and closer. The Swiss phenomenon has been away from the circuit for almost a year now, given that his last official tournament dates back to the Australian Open 2020, when he surrendered in the semifinals to world number 1 Novak Djokovic. A double surgery on his right knee put a strain on King Roger's physique and patience, as he hoped to return to the pitch earlier this season. Thanks also to the strict measures imposed by the Australian government, the 39-year-old from Basel has instead decided to give up the Happy Slam for the first time in the last 23 editions. According to the words of his manager Tony Godsick, the 20-time Grand Slam champion could make his return to one of the tournaments on the fast after the AO, perhaps in Rotterdam or Dubai.

Roger Federer has played in four Olympic Games

Roger Federer's main goals will be Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics, postponed by twelve months due to the global pandemic. Gold in singles is one of the few awards still missing from his extraordinary showcase. However, the capital of Japan has had to deal with a significant increase in infections in recent weeks. The daily cases are around a thousand, enough to induce the Prime Minister to declare a state of emergency in Tokyo and surrounding areas. The IOC reiterated that another postponement of the Games would not be financially sustainable and that the cancellation could therefore become the only possible solution. "Japanese public opinion is increasingly opposed to holding the Olympics this summer and the state of emergency reinforces the perception that the Games are increasingly at risk" - said Koichi Nakano, a professor at the University of Tokyo. Federer can boast a gold medal in doubles won in Beijing in 2008, while in singles he had to settle for silver in London 2012 (defeated in three sets by host Andy Murray). In 2021, Roger Federer has entered his 23rd year as a professional tennis player, and his career graph has been amazing. He has won so much and thus many admire him. Because of this admiration, many people have written about him, and some of this writing has even been in the form of books. Now, there is a new book on Federer, which has snippets from his personal life and an exploration of his career. This new book is titled ‘The Master: The Brilliant Career of Roger Federer’ and is written by Christopher Clarey. The book is expected to be available later in the year, so expect a tussle between tennis fans for a copy!
