Charleston Open: Garbine Muguruza, Petra Kvitova move into 3R
Wildcard Emma Navarro reached the second round of the Charleston Open on Tuesday. The American defeated Mexican qualifier Renata Zarazua 6-4, 6-3 and will next play 15th seed Veronika Kudermetova.
Sloane Stephens will take on eighth seed Madison Keys in the second round. The 2017 US Open champion defeated lucky loser Xinyu Wang 6-2, 6-4. Stephens’ match against Keys will be a repeat of their 2019 face-off here in Charleston. Back then Keys had won, en route to claiming the title.
Ons Jabeur also came through in her opener. The Tunisian, seeded 12th, defeated Martina Trevisan 6-2, 6-2. In the second round, Jabeur will play Hailey Baptiste. The American wildcard defeated fellow American, lucky loser Caroline Dolehide, 6-3, 6-3.
Leylah Fernandez caused the solitary upset of the day. The Canadian defeated 16th seed Shuai Zhang 6-3, 6-1 in just 68 minutes. In the next round, the left-hander will play Danka Kovinic. The Montenegrin ousted Romanian qualifier Gabriela Talaba 7-6(2), 6-4.
Shelby Rogers set up a second-round derby against 13th seed Amanda Anisimova. The American won her opener against Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Anastasija Sevastova claimed a win against Anastasia Potapova 6-3, 6-3. Sevastova will next play Cathy McNally.
Charleston Open: Garbine Muguruza, Coco Gauff all march aheadLiudmila Samsonova defeated Nao Hibino 6-2, 6-1 in their first-round match. The Russian will play 14th seed Coco Gauff in the second round. Gauff won the last match of the day, beating Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3, 6-0.
Meanwhile, seeds came out on top in the three second-round matches played on Tuesday.
Third seed Petra Kvitova advanced to the pre-quarter-finals with a 7-6(4), 6-2 win over Australian qualifier Storm Sanders. This is Kvitova’s first win in the event.
Like Kvitova, sixth seed Garbine Muguruza also claimed her first win at the Charleston Open after coming through her round-of-32 clash against Magdalena Frech 6-1, 6-3. Muguruza’s next opponent is 11th seed Yulia Putintseva who beat Zarina Diyas 6-2, 6-2.
