Alexander Zverev speaks on his rivalry with Dominic Thiem

German tennis star Alexander Zverev beat Dominic Thiem to make the Madrid Masters final as he hopes he and the Austrian will play many more big matches.

Zverev, ranked at No. 6 in the world, handed a 6-3 6-4 loss to Thiem to make his second Madrid Masters final.

Zverev now has three wins eight losses against Thiem.

“We have had some fantastic matches. We have played the biggest matches in the world. We have played Masters 1000 finals, we have played Grand Slam finals and [the rivalry] is still developing,” Zverev said in his post-match interview. “It is still going to go on for a few more years. Hopefully we will play a few more amazing matches.”

Zverev outplayed Thiem

Thiem had the first break point of the match in the third game but Zverev saved it.

After saving a break point in the third game, Zverev broke Thiem in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead.

Zverev then didn't face a single break point in the rest of the set as he routinely held on to his serve to win the opener.

Thiem served out the opening game of the second set but then suffered back-to-back breaks as Zverev took a 4-1 lead.

Thiem got one break back in the sixth game and served out the seventh game to reduce the deficit to 4-3.

But Zverev held on to his serve in the following two games to book a straight-set win.

Zverev will play in the final the winner of the match between Matteo Berrettini and Casper Ruud.

“It is going to mean a lot to me [if I can win the final]. I am definitely looking forward to it,” Zverev said. “I am definitely looking forward to playing another big final and I hope I can turn it my way this time.”

Zverev won it all at the Madrid Masters in 2018.
