Bad Homburg Open: Angelique Kerber and Katerina Siniakova to play for title

With rain affecting play on Thursday, three quarter-finals and one semi-final had to be played on Friday at the Bad Homburg Open. At the end of the day, Angelique Kerber and Katerina Siniakova pulled successful double duty to reach the final in the German event.

Siniakova, ranked 76th in the world, posted two upsets in her two matches of the day. First, in the quarter-final, she took down eighth seed Laura Siegemund 7-5, 6-4 in an hour and 45 minutes. Then, in the semi-final, she ousted seventh seed Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 21 minutes.

Speaking after her win, the Czech said, “I’ve never been in a final on grass courts, so I was really fighting the grass. But I think I can suit my game to the grass, so I’m really happy that I won four matches and I’m in the final.”

While this is Siniakova’s first WTA final for the 2021 season, for Kerber, the wait for making it to another final had been quite long. This is the former world no. 1’s first WTA final in two years, since reaching the Eastbourne final in 2019 (lost to Karolina Pliskova).

En route to making it to the last round at home, the German faced – and came through – uphill battles in both her quarter-final and semi-final. Kerber came from down a set in both matches.

The fourth seed won her quarter-final against Amanda Anisimova 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 34 minutes. Then, in her semi-final against the top-seed Petra Kvitova, Kerber posted a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) win in two hours and four minutes.

Post-match, reflecting on her day, Kerber shared, “I don’t know when I [last] played six sets in one day, I think it’s a long, long time ago. But physically I’m feeling good. I will try to recover as fast as possible before tomorrow.” Then, talking about her final against Siniakova, she added, “(Siniakova) is another tough opponent, and she played well today, she also played two matches. I think I will go out there, try to play aggressive, thinking more (about) what I want to do and how I played today, and try to continue this for tomorrow’s match and enjoy the final.”

Their Bad Homburg Open final will be the sixth meeting between Angelique Kerber and Katerina Siniakova. Kerber had a 4-1 record against Siniakova, including a win over her at the Grampians Trophy in January 2021.
