ATP Atlanta: Nick Kyrgios, Jack Sock demolish No. 3 seeds in doubles opener
Nick Kyrgios and Jack Sock have made an outstanding start to their doubles campaign at the Atlanta Open.
Kyrgios and Sock, who received a wild card into the Atlanta doubles event, demolshed third-seeded Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Divij Sharan 6-1 6-3 in their opener at the tournament.
Qureshi and Sharan served out the opening game of the match but then Kyrgios and Sock earned three consecutive breaks and won six games in a row to comfortably claim the opener.
Kyrgios and Sock served out the opening game of the second set to extend their run to seven consecutive games but Qureshi and Sharan served out the following game to make it all tied at one game apiece.
But it didn't take long for Kyrgios and Sock to go on another run as they broke Qureshi and Sock in the fourth game en route to taking a 4-1 kead.
Kyrgios and Sock then held on to their serve the rest of the way to book a straight-set win.
Sock happy to be playing against with Kyrgios“We’ve played together a bunch before and we’re close friends,” Sock told the ATP website. “I actually haven’t seen him in about 18 months since the pandemic hit. We actually all had dinner in Indian Wells right before they announced the whole Tour – and the whole world, really – was shutting down. We all had dinner there, and then we all flew to our separate homes the next day. That was the last time we saw each other.
“But I knew he was playing here, and this was the first tournament that we actually played together since that time. I figured we’d lace them up and see what happens.”
Kyrgios and Sock are aiming to win their second team title in Atlanta.
Three years ago, Kyrgios and Sock won it all in Lyon.
Kyrgios and Sock plays next against either Steve Johnson and Jordan Thompson or Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow.
