Tennys Sandgren slams his performance: I was so bad, I'm probably gonna quit

USA's Tennys Sandgren was extremely disappointed after failing to win a medal at the Tokyo Olympics as he has said that he will likely retire now.

On Friday, Sandgren and fellow compatriot Austin Krajicek failed to win bronze medal afer losing to Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus of New Zealand in straight sets.

"I'm probably gonna’ quit. That might be my last match. I’m close, yeah, I’m close," Sandgren said after the loss, per the Olympics website.

When asked whether he would have done anything differently on the day if given another chance, Sandgren said: "Yeah, not have been so bad."

Meanwhile, Krajicek admitted it was "devastating" to lose the bronze medal match.

"There’s not much you can say about that except it's pretty, pretty devastating to lose that one,” Krajicek said. “You know, [you] give yourself a chance to get a medal and then to lose those two [matches - including the men's doubles semifinal] is tough, but you have to give those guys credit today. They played well."

Daniell and Venus made history after beating Sandgren and Krajicek

Daniell and Venus, who claimed a 7-6 (3) 6-2 win, claimed first Olympic tennis medal for New Zealand.

After losing a tight first set, Sandgren and Krajicek twice lost their serve in the second set as Daniell and Venus booked a straight-set win.

"I can't describe how much that means. We don't often get to feel that on the tour. We have the country next to our name, but it's for ourselves. To be able to come to the Olympics and come away with a bronze and do it for New Zealand... it's just very surreal;" Daniell said.

"We've made a little bit of history today and I really hope it's inspiring to the younger generation in New Zealand and gets people to pick up some tennis rackets and see it as a high performance sport, as an Olympic sport."
