David Ferrer: 'Having another Rafael Nadal will be impossible'

David Ferrer feels confident about the future of men's Spanish tennis. Speaking to Marca, Ferrer said: 'You have very good players. I think you can have a David Ferrer. Without going too far, Carlod Alcaraz. Carlos Gimeno, and now we have Carreño, Bautista, who are close to the top 10. Another player like Carlos Taberner, who I am practicing with, is coming through. Having another Rafa Nadal will be instead impossible.'

Asked to pick the most special moment in his career, Ferrer replied: 'It's difficult to choose but I select the Paris Bercy Masters 1000. The two Davis Cup in Palau Sant Jordi and Sevilla. What I am most proud of is the way I went through since when I was a top 100 until when I ended my career.'

His biggest regret: 'The Miami final with Murray where I had a match point, the London Games in doubles with Feliciano and the Godó, where I played four finals and I lost all of them with Nadal. Not having the Godó on my achievements list hurts me.'

Could Ferrer become a coach? 'I do not deny being a coach because I like tennis and I will definitely be connected to tennis. But I have been travelling for 18 years and I also have my wife, my child, I am in Javea and I need time to enjoy with them. I head into a new stage of my life and I want to be calmer. If I had a good ranking I would keep playing. I do not leave it for my child or family. I do not have a ranking that allows me to be where I would want but this is the life rule. Now I enjoy walking in Javea and I enjoy a lot.'
