Serena Williams praises BJ King for prize money equality
All the four Grand Slams offer the same prize money for men and women in the singles draws and also tournaments like for example the BNP Paribas Open of Indian Wells. Serena Williams explained why there is so much money at stake in the WTA. 'I think women's tennis has been the pioneer for women's sports', said Serena. 'And I believe one of the reasons is because of wonderful pioneers such as Billie Jean King, her sitting down 40 years ago and saying, Look, especially to the US Open, we're not going to accept anything less than equal prize money here, what the men get. Eventually starting their own tour, going from there. It just takes great leaders to have such a wonderful sport. We're so fortunate in women's tennis to have great leaders such as her.'
Williams feels happy and proud for her relationship with Caroline Wozniacki. 'We're obviously ‑‑I don't know her that well, but I just feel a connection with her that I just love. I just really like her as a person and as a player, and I have so much respect for her. It's great when, you know, we get to play each other, because she always gives her all. From the first time I have ever played her until today it's always been the same', said Serena, who will start her 2019 season at the Hopman Cup.
