Dominic Thiem keen on challenging Federer: I dreaming of winning Halle

A star-studded field has already been set for the Gerry Weber Open that will take place from 15 to 23 June 2019, in what will be the 27th edition of the German tennis tournament. Nine-time champion Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem, Kei Nishikori, who signed a three-year contract to play there until 2019, and Hyeon Chung have all committed to playing the event. In a statement, Thiem - who lost in the opening round in 2018 - has kind of "warned" his rivals, saying he hopes to lift the trophy. 'Of course, I’m dreaming of winning the Gerry Weber Open one day. I won the tournament in Stuttgart two years ago and reached the semi-finals in Halle.'

Although Thiem's best surface is considered to be clay, he has decent results on grass, too. In 2016, he won the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart and on indoor hard court St. Petersburg Open, he won the title defeating Martin Klizan in a straight-set final. Borna Coric is the defending champion as he defeated Federer in this year's three-set final, he is yet to commit to the tournament.

Thiem will start his new season at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, then he will play in Doha and at the Australian Open.
