Four-time champion David Ferrer set for final Auckland appearance

Spanish tennis star David Ferrer will play Auckland for the final time in his career this coming January.

The 36-year-old is set to retire from tennis after the Madrid Masters in May.

The Spaniard is planning to play a couple of events in 2019.

Ferrer including Auckland in his 2019 schedule shouldn't come as a big surprise as the Auckland event for years has served him as the last preparation for the Australian Open.

The 36-year-old will be making his 14th appearance in Auckland from January 07-12.

Ferrer has had success in Auckland throughout his career as he is a four-time champion at the tournament.

The Spaniard won his maiden Auckland in 2007 before he captured three titles in a row from 2011 to 2013.

Also, four of Ferrer's previous 13 Auckland appearances ended in the semi-final.

"To be included on David's list of favorite tournaments, and one of the few events he'll be playing in 2019, is really fantastic. We're honored to be able to have him back out on centre court one more time and we know he's going to put on a performance for his loyal fans," Auckland Tournament Director Karl Budge said, per Newshub.

"We will organize something special to say goodbye to a very close friend and humble champion come January."
