Gerard Pique blasted by former player: He has nothing to do with tennis

The former Italian tennis player Nicola Pietrangeli commented on the new Davis Cup format, blasting the FC Barcelona star Gerard Pique who features as one of the main investors. 'The International Federation got sold itself because nothing worked,' said Pietrangeli. 'This man, Pique, joined the crew. He plays football very well but he has nothing to do with tennis, he brought a lot of money on the table and the ITF got attracted by him. Also because Grand Slams do not need the support of the International Federation. For me the Davis Cup is a mum and this format is a ridiculous, terrible format.'

Meanwhile, Italy's Davis Cup team captain Corrado Barazzutti said the 2018 French Open semifnalist Marco Cecchinato can go far on hard as well. 'Marco reached a great achievement,' said Barazzutti. 'He was playing on clay, but he can do well on hard too. He needs to make the next step, and he needs to convince himself that he can do well on hard as well. That's the key to stay at the top of the rankings. He is working on it and I am sure he will do it. In the meanwhile he is one of the strongest clay-court players, which is not a small thing. Matteo has always had a big potential, you were noticing it since he was a little guy, and he can do even better, he will improve more. He is so young, he has a great body and he is one of the best players of his generation. He is going to have a great career.'
