I had a moment of rejuvenation after break in 2016, says Roger Federer
In an interview to the Wall Street Journal, Roger Federer recalled his win at the 2017 Australian Open against Rafael Nadal in the championship clash. For the Swiss, taking a six-month break in 2016 was the key. 'I never thought it was going to pay off this way. Maybe what it took was this moment of rejuvenation, of stepping away, then stepping back into the light,' said Federer.
Federer finally spoke about how switching to a 97 inches racket in 2014 helped him: 'The new racket has helped me a lot on the backhand drive and on the serve, just getting more consistency, easier power. I enjoy my tennis more because I can dictate play more, I can come to the net, I’m in charge, I can be creative.'
Federer finally said that he thought other tournaments are basically as important as Grand Slams: 'I feel something special, whether it's the ATP World Cup, Davis Cup or Laver Cup. You have to decide alone what's important. It's a shame that press thinks today only four events are left and the rest is not important. I always said that Halle is not a preparation for me. Wimbledon and Cincinnati are not for the US Open. I do not like to watch tournaments as a way for a goal. But the importance of the Grand Slams was also raised by players. Now everyone travels to Australia, everyone is playing on grass, clay and hard. It was not the case in the past.'
