It won't take too much before Roger Federer retires, says Bertens' coach

Former tennis player and current Kiki Bertens' coach Raemon Sluiter believes that Roger Federer's quotes during this year's US Open may be a sign that his retirement from the game may not be that close. Speaking to AD, Sluiter stated: 'He said: "I do not plan to retire, yet". What Federer said attracted a lot of people. I don't think that's a lapsus. Not with Federer, who is aware of what he says during his career. I told a friend who was coming to the Us Open, that it won't take too much. It's an instinct solution.'

Commenting on Federer getting defeated by John Millman, Sluiter added: 'That loss happened in a very big way. At his home, he lost a match that he had over total control. It took a while for him to regroup. In his first tournament in Cincinnati, he reached the final, but he was not relaxed at all. There is something in his mind. The end may come earlier than all of us expect to.'

After facing each other for four times in the 2017 season, there were a lot of expectations on a potential meeting between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in 2018, but it didn't happen. In May after winning the Rome Open the Spanish player had said he would love to face Federer again. Nadal leads head to head meetings 23-15, but Federer won the last five matches played between them. What does the 32-year-old have to do to beat the 37-year-old again? Toni Nadal was asked this question by NRC and he replied: 'It's not my problem anymore. I do not have any idea if he is considering another tactic against Federer. Now Rafa works with other coaches, the past does not matter anymore and the situation changed. If Roger would have beaten Rafael on clay? I do not think so. Now he takes the ball early on the backhand side, but that kind of game is more difficult on clay.'
