Maria Sharapova explains why it's difficult to make friendships on tour

Maria Sharapova often claimed she has no friends in tennis and in a recent press conference the former world No. 1 explained why. 'It's hard to be friends with someone that's going -- that might be your opponent in the next round', said Sharapova. 'Obviously, nothing against any of my opponents. But, you know, it's difficult to go really, really good friends off the court and then going on the court and trying to beat them. I mean, when you're off the court, it's friendly, but it's hard to become best friends with them. That's normal.'

At the same time, Sharapova praised Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert: 'I have a lot of respect to those athletes. They've achieved so many things. What they did for the sport was amazing. It's not easy being a professional athlete. And I think that the way, you know, they achieved so many things in life, what they wanted to do, you know, it's amazing, and it's also great for the game.'

'I think a lot of us spend so much time committing ourselves to not only the game of tennis, you know, with tennis comes a lot of things. We're very fortunate to have what we have, and a lot ofus are able to give back. I think it's an incredible thing.  Many men and women on the tour are able to help with their time and money all over the world to causes. That's something that we like to create awareness of.'
