Minister praises Becker:'With Novak Djokovic he has achieved great success'
Minister Boris Pistorius praised Boris Becker for his contribution to the world and German tennis. In an interview in Hannover on Thursday, Pistorius said: 'Almost no one embraces tennis in Germany like Boris Becker. He gave an unprecedented boom of tennis in the 80s and 90s and he is still a great role model for all the younger players. Also as a coach of Novak Djokovic he has achieved great success. With his large experience, he helps us to further develope the hopes of young talents in Germany. From this our athletes can only benefit.'
Becker has won six Grand Slam titles with Djokovic from 2014 to 2016.
Meanwhile, the seven-time Grand Slam winner John McEnroe celebrated his retirement from the Senior Tour at the Royal Albert Hall in London. He said: 'It’s a different feeling than the main Tour. We all go out and play 100 per cent, but there are a different feeling and a camaraderie amongst these guys. I must say, for all these guys to come out, it means a lot. It’s been a lot of fun all these years… I remember coming here [for the first time] and I thought this is one of the most amazing places. A couple years ago I said I just can’t do this anymore. So, of course, they were so nice and they started helping me out and making it easier for me, let’s just put it that way,” McEnroe said, cracking a laugh. “These guys are very good at that, they’re pros. And then I said that’s it and then they said come back to play doubles one more time to say goodbye, so all I can say is thank you.'
