Mubadala WTC: Venus Williams edges sister Serena in match tie break

The 11th edition of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship has brought the second women's match, 12 months after Jelena Ostapenko defeated Serena Williams in three sets. Serena was in action again but it wasn't to be for her for the second straight year, with Venus Williams prevailing 4-6 6-3 10-8 in just under an hour and a half. The most famous sisters in the world of tennis and probably in the sport in general have won 30 Grand Slam singles crown together and they have played 30 times on the Tour against each other, including two matches they have split at Indian Wells and the US Open.

Serena and Venus are among the oldest players on the WTA Tour but they are still ranked in the top-20 and top-40 respectively, eager to play on a high level in 2019 as well and fight for big titles more than 20 years after they made a debut on the pro level. Serena saved break points in the opening service games and she moved ahead with a break in game four when Venus hit a forehand long. Serena saved a break point in the seventh game to forge a 5-2 lead but Venus found the way to break back in game nine and prolong the set. Nonetheless, Serena grabbed another break in game 10 with a deep return to clinch the opener 6-4, hoping for more of the same in the rest of the encounter.

The second set kicked off with three straight breaks and it was Venus who secured two to move ahead, serving well in the rest of the set and wrapping up the set with another break in game nine after a well-constructed attack that forced an error from Serena. The match tie break saw six mini-breaks in the first 12 points on both sides and it was Venus who clinched the crucial mini-break in the 18th point to take the breaker 10-8 and celebrate the win over her younger sister.
