Playing in Africa would be a dream for Roger Federer, says close source

Roger Federer never hided that he would love to play an exhibition match in Africa. The Swiss champion has played exhibition matches in many countries around the world, but never in the biggest continent ever. In an exclusive interview with Tennis World USA, the CEO of the Foundation named after the 37-year-old, Janine Händel, confirmed this is an ongoing desire for them. 'This is certainly a Roger's goal. It is in our mind, in our plans, but too early at this stage for it to happen. But hopefully one day he will play an exhibition match in Africa. Roger's ambition is to play charity or exhibition matches where tennis is not so popular, where people do not know a lot about tennis. That is why playing in Africa will be a dream come true for him.'

Händel also confirmed that next year the Match for Africa 6 will take place in Japan. The date has not been set yet, but it may happen in early October before the Rolex Shanghai Masters. 'It is no secret anymore that the next Match for Africa will be held in Japan, after holding three in Switzerland and two in the United States', said Händel. 'It will be a great opportunity with Roger's sponsors, to make Japanese people understand to sensibilize people about the need for Africa but also the power of Africa, communicating what the Foundation is about. And of course it's an opportunity for the Foundation to generate money which will benefit our programmes. We are very grateful to any player who has partecipated in our exhibition matches.'
