Richard Gasquet to miss Australian Open due to injury
Richard Gasquet will miss the Australian Open that takes place from 14 to 27 January 2019. The French player has been dealing with a groin injury for months and he is not ready to make a comeback yet. Gasquet had already missed the first calendar Grand Slam of the year in 2016 due to a back injury. He will now continue his rehabilitation trying to compete again at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier that starts on Monday, January 4. Gasquet's compatriot Ugo Humbert joins the main draw.
In an interview to France info, Gasquet said: 'I always had the same injury since Bercy, I could not play the Davis Cup, it's a complicated injury, I have a kind of groin injury on the left side, it's very painful. It's not easy but we do what's necessary working hard every day. I hope to he back as soon as possible in February, but in January it will definitely not be possible. I have no idea on when I will be able to comeback, there were some improvements recently but there are still areas where it hurts. It's difficult not playing, missing tournaments.'
Earlier this year Gasquet had a good run in Melbourne, losing to Roger Federer in a third round straight-set match after defeating Lorenzo Sonego and Blaz Kavcic in straights in the two previous rounds. He also lost to Rafael Nadal in the French Open third round, while he won the Libema Open in 's-Hertogenbosch on grass.
