Roger Federer played best tennis ever at 2017 Australian Open, says Gilbert
In an interview to the Wall Street Journal, tennis coach Brad Gilbert recalled Roger Federer's 2017 Australian Open title. The Swiss played an unbelievable tennis defeating four top ten players - Tomas Berdych, Kei Nishikori, Stan Wawrinka and Rafael Nadal - to win his first Major title in four-and-a-half years, since 2012 Wimbledon. 'It all came together in one match,' said Gilbert about Federer's five-set win over Nadal. 'He’s pushed the envelope in that he’s made improvements in his game, which is very difficult to do at 35, now 36. I actually have never seen him play better tennis ever.'
Federer stopped competing for six months in the second-half of 2016 and then made an amazing comeback in 2017 winning six titles. 'I didn’t know that…a break of six months was going to lead to such great things. If I would have known that, I would have taken the break earlier,' said Federer.
Since his six-month break in 2016, Federer won three Majors, the 2017 and 2018 Australian Open, and 2017 Wimbledon and returned as the world no. 1, after winning the ABN Amro Open in Rotterdam, for a short time in 2018. He also completed the Sunshine Double (winning Indian Wells and Miami) for the third time in his career, in 2017.
