Simona Halep embodies the meaning of dedication and determination
How many tears had Simona Halep shed, before the French Open victory? Definitely a lot given she had come second-best in three Major finals.
Against Sloane Stephens, in Paris, the beginning had been daunting. Yet Simona was able to subvert the fate of the match, showing willpower and incredible mental strength. The Romanian embodies the meaning of dedication and determination. She sent a clear message to all her detractors; she was a Major winner now, and this was just the beginning.
Now that this last major rock has been overcome, I'm pretty sure she will add more Majors to her bulletin board. More than anything, the world no. 1 was the most consistent player on the Tour, in 2018.
She showed her consistency from January, with the victory in Shenzhen against Katerina Siniakova. Then she played and lost the final of the Australian Open. Good performances also in Doha and Indian Wells, where she reached the semi-finals. In the clay swing, Halep reached the quarter-finals in Stuttgart and Madrid, she lost the final in Rome against Elina Svitolina and she finally won the Roland Garros.
As had often happened in the past, the season on grass was not positive. She left the scene at Wimbledon in the third round against Su-Wei Hsieh. In the second-half of the season, she tasted victory in Montreal, again against Stephens, defeat in the final of Cincinnati against Kiki Bertens.
The last part of the season, between the US Open and the Asian swing, was definitely one to forget for her since she had to end the season early because of an injury.
However, the courage and stubbornness shown by Halep have been a great sign for all the young enthusiasts who are about to enter the world of tennis; the defeats, even if painful, must not reduce morale. Perseverance, determination, grit and dedication are all important qualities. And Simona has all in abundance.
