TW USA Exclusive - Goran Djokovic: 'Novak would be welcome in Sofia'

Goran Djokovic is the new Sofia Open Tournament Director replacing the former world No. 1 doubles player Paul McNamee and in an exclusive interview with Tennis World USA the world No. 1 champion Novak's uncle said that the 14-time Major winner may play the Bulgarian tournament from 4 to 10 February in case of an early Australian Open exit. Djokovic has won six titles in the first Calendar Grand Slam of the year and he heads into Melbourne being the favourite. 'He has an open invitation', Goran Djokovic said. 'He is playing the Australian Open and everything depends on him and his team. He has a very, very tough schedule and we will keep a wild card for him until the last minute. Let's see. It's difficult.'

Bulgaria's number one Grigor Dimitrov did not commit to the tournament, which may be surprising. 'He is the country's top player and he has always an invitation. Sometimes it happens for different reasons, when I was the Belgrade Open Tournament Director Novak Djokovic did not play in two editions. He is always welcome, maybe not for the next year but for the year after. We already have some good names. It's not easy with the top ten players but they are very, very happy with the field, having (Karen) Khachanov and (Stefanos) Tsitsipas.'

Djokovic looks forward to welcoming Stan Wawrinka back in the tournament: 'He likes Bulgaria and he always likes to come back here. I hope and I strongly believe that he will do his best to deliver his best performance.'
