Alexander Zverev: My ankle is swollen but it's nothing, it takes time'
German tennis star Alexander Zverev said he "was feeling good" during his Australian Open first round clash.
The 21-year-old picked up a small ankle injury at the Hopman Cup but that didn't prevent him from thrashing Aljaz Bedene at Melbourne Park on Tuesday 6-4 6-1 6-4.
"Still swollen, yeah, but something that's going to take time. It's nothing that's getting worse or anything like that. It's not in my head, and especially when I start playing I don't feel pain too much. So for me it's fine," Zverev acknowledged after beating Bedene.
Zverev, ranked at No. 4 in the world, ended the 2018 season on the best possible way, having won the Nitto ATP Finals event.
The 21-year-old will now certainly be extremely motivated to put all the pieces together at Melbourne Park and claim his maiden Grand Slam title.
"I mean, surely it (winning it all at the Nitto ATP Finals) was a great moment and really helped, because it's one of the biggest tournaments that we have in the world. To win it gives you a lot of great confidence to beat those players, because they have a lot of great confidence, as well. And I hope I can continue doing the things I have been doing for a while," Zverev said.
Andy Murray said a few days ago he kind of regrets pushing his body so hard because his right hip injury is kind of the result.
However, Zverev remains committed and dedicated to the hard work as he said: "No, I'll try my hardest always. I mean, if that's the question. I will do everything I can to not get injured but doesn't mean I will not try my hardest."
Zverev also spoke about his collaboration with coach Ivan Lendl as he said the two have been working on many parts of his game.
Zverev plays next against French Jeremy Chardy.
