Australian Open: French doubles superstars complete Career Grand Slam

France's Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut have completed a Career Grand Slam.

The fifth-seeded Frenchmen defeated No. 12 seeds Henri Kontinen and John Peers in the Australian Open men's doubles final 6-4 7-6 (1).

Herbert and Mahut blew a total of six break points early on in the first set but broke Kontinen and Peers in the ninth game before they served out for the opener in the following game.

The second set went into a tie-break after the Frenchmen saved four break points and blew their two break point opportunities.

Herbert and Mahut dominated the tie-break to avoid any drama and seal the win in an hour and 38 minutes.

The Frenchmen converted just 1-of-9 of their break point chances but saved all four of Kontinen and Peers: break point opportunities.

Herbert, 27, and 37-year-old Mahut needed an Australian Open title to complete a Career Grand Slam

They fell just short of winning their maiden Grand Slam title as a team at Melbourne Park in 2015 as they ended runners-up at the event.

Herbert and Mahut won it all together at the US Open in 2015, Wimbledon in 2016 and French Open last year.

On the other side, Kontinen and Peers -- who won their maiden Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park two years ago -- fell just short of claiming their second Grand Slam glory.

Kontinen and Peers didn't drop a single set on their way to the final as they won five matches in straight sets to set up a final clash against Herbert and Mahut.

Full result:

[5] Pierre-Hugues Herbert (FRA) & [5] Nicolas Mahut (FRA) & [12] Henri Kontinen (FIN) & [12] John Peers (AUS) 6-4 7-6 (1)
