I got offered 1,500 euros to lose a final, says French player
In an interview to RCM Sport, the French player Hugo Nys commented on the several requests made by some French people to tennis players for fixing matches in order to earn money through betting.
'It happened to me twice or thrice', said Nys, who is playing doubles at the Australian Open with Benoit Paire. 'I informed the authorities straight away, but it happens every week in any part of the world. Someone may not think a lot. They get offered a good amount. I was offered €1,500, €2,000, for example, to lose a final. They say that around the world where there are so many matches, you will not get noticed. All the matches in the world, Futures, qualies, are on online betting websites. How can a guy from Uzbekistan bet on a first round qualifying in Turkey? This is ridiculous, there is no control in these tournaments. They want to kill your family, that you get cancer. We deal with it and no one does anything. When the guy says that you know where you live, where your girlfriend lives, it becomes a serious threat.'
How to deal with it? 'I do not know what we can do', admitted Nys, a world No. 79 doubles player who earned $288,000 career prize money so far. 'We do not have to cheat, and the threats cannot be an excuse. They (alleged players) know that they cheat when they accept to. I played in the secondary circuit, I had no sponsor. And you go to little French tournaments to make money.'
