Insider reveals major worry on Roger Federer's mindset
In an interview to Tennisnet the journalist Simon Graf revealed an interesting thing on how Roger Federer copes with expectations. Federer had a lot of success over the years, but it does not mean he does not get nervous. 'He feels under pressure', Graf explained. 'That he plays not to lose rather than to win. This is the wrong attitude. This is what he has been working on with his team now. Before the ATP Finals, I had an interview with Severin Luthi. He said: Roger has nothing to lose - even if he does not win a match, he is a tennis god. This should be the same for Roger, because he lost that freedom in the last months. He may need an outsider role again, thinking: I have got nothing not to lose.'
During the spring Federer was in the Zurich Airport before leaving to Indian Wells, and no passengers asked him for an autograph or a selfie, not even at Los Angeles airport. Is this a typical Swiss mentality, leaving people alone? 'I think so. He loves it, so he can have a normal life. He goes in the outdoor pool. Obviously there is a selfie here and there, but he does not get surrounded. He can walk over Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich. People turn around, but that's all. This is the Swiss mentality, pretty reserved and shy. For him it's great: he does not need bodyguards, he can move around normally.'
