Maria Sharapova to play in St. Petersburg despite injury - Medvedev

The WTA St. Petersburg Open Tournament Director Alexander Medvedev is confident that Maria Sharapova will compete in the Russian tournament. The five-time Major winner retired during her quarter-final match last week against Aryna Sablenka at the Shenzhen Open due to a thigh injury but she is back to practice in Melbourne ahead of the Australian Open. 'This year we have a star-stunned field, three top ten players: the Czech Petra Kvitova who will defend her title, Kiki Bertens from Netherlands, our Daria Kasatkina, who started raising the tennis rankings in St. Petersburg. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Kristina Mladenovic will be there. Maria Sharapova will play the tournament, and we were worried about her injury in China.'
