Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal sell a lot, says Mercedes Cup chief
The Mercedes Cup enjoyed some big success in the last years, first bringing Rafael Nadal in 2015 - that year the Spaniard won defeating Victor Troicki in a straight-set final - and then from 2016 onwards having Roger Federer. The Tournament Director Edwin Weindorfer believes that the commercial boost created by Nadal and Federer is pretty the same. 'Both sell a lot in the stadium every day they play', Weindorfer told Tennis World USA. 'I do not see a difference. They have the same qualities in Stuttgart. The difference was that Rafa won three times already, two times on clay and one time on grass, and Roger played three times and won one time. But when they played, they both sold a lot.'
Last year Nick Kyrgios lost to Federer in a third set tie-breaker in the semifinals after a thriling match. The Australian recently said he wants to keep a light schedule for 2019, he usually commits to play Queen's as well prior to Wimbledon but Weindorfer is confident he will be back in Stuttgart too: 'We are very, very positive that Nick Kyrgios will play again this year. He was playing very well last year. With Nick a lot of things can always happen, both positive and negative. He is quite a controversial character but I am looking forward to have him again in Stuttgart. It's a budget discussion at this age.'
Asked if he reached an agreement with any other top player, Weindorfer replied: 'Not at this stage. Because we first have to make sure if we have a deal with Roger Federer or not. If he will not have a deal with us, there will be budget for other top players. I hope he takes a decision after the Australian Open.'
