Serena Williams wouldn't have played Australian Open semi-final - Coach
Patrick Mouratoglou commented on Serena Williams's ankle issue during her Australian Open quarter-final loss to Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday. In her press conference after her loss to Pliskova, Serena played down fears on her fitness condition, but Mouratoglou believes that this problem affected her in the latter stages of the match. 'She could have called the trainer because she felt pain,' Mouratoglou, who has been the 23-time Major winner's coach since June 2012, confessed on Eurosport. 'I think she didn't call it because she knew she would have lost and the tournament was finished. With a stricter tape she may have gone forward and won the match but I strongly doubt she would have played Tomorrow (Thursday). She may have thought about it as well.'
The seven-time Grand Slam winner Mats Wilander instead disagreed with Mouratoglou's concerns on ankle: 'It looked like she moved well. She was running okay. Federer did not win the big points against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Serena did the same against Pliskova. At some point they do not win the big points anymore even if they are two of the greatest players of all time. She did not call the trainer because it didn't matter to her. I am sorry Patrick, I 100% disagree that she would not have played tomorrow, she did not twist enough and she knows that if she wins she can play tomorrow.'
Naomi Osaka defeated Pliskova in three sets in the semi-final, and faced Petra Kvitova in the final.
