ATP Buenos Aires: Marco Cecchinato downs Diego Schwartzman to win title

The second leg of the South American clay Golden Swing in Buenos Aires saw the 3rd and 4th seeds battling for the title, and it was the Italian Marco Cecchinato who claimed the third ATP title after a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over the home favorite Diego Schwartzman. Trying to become the first Argentinian champion here since David Nalbandian in 2008, Diego had nothing left in the tank after a grueling Saturday when he defeated Dominic Thiem in two and a half hours after saving a match point, also playing the doubles match with the Austrian until 10 pm! Marco served at 65% and he never experienced troubles behind the initial shot, dropping eight points in eight service games and never facing a break point.

On the other hand, Diego landed more than 70% of the first serve in although that gave him nothing, losing half of the points in his games and getting broken four times from nine chances to send Marco over the finish line. The Italian was in the right zone from the very first shot, delivering easy holds and building the confidence to push hard in the return games. On the other hand, Schwartzman suffered from the very beginning, saving three break points in game two before losing serve next time around when his initial shot barely reached the net. A backhand down the line winner pushed Marco 5-1 up, sealing the opener with an ace in the following game after just 28 minutes.

Nothing changed in set number two, with Cecchinato forging a lead in the very first game before Diego found some energy for two good holds before he sprayed a forehand error to find himself 5-2 down. Serving for the title, Marco fired three winners in game eight to celebrate the third ATP title and achieve a career-high ranking on Monday.
