Dominic Thiem: Playing Grand Slam final was dream come true
Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem says reaching a Grand Slam final was a dream come true as he is now motivated to reach more finals at the Major events.
The Austrian made back-to-back French Open semi-finals in 2016 and 2017 before he went a step further at Roland Garros last year.
Despite playing on a high level throughout the tournament, the 25-year-old stood no chance against Spain's Rafael Nadal in the final.
Nadal, 32, beat Thiem 6-4 6-3 6-2 to win a record 11th French Open title.
"Playing a Grand Slam final was a dream come true. I didn't win the title but (reaching the) final was still a great result. Honestly, when I started playing tennis or when I started on the tour, I didn't think I would one day stand there, on this huge court, against Rafa, on the last day of the tournament. It was a great experience and it helped me a lot. It also motivated me to reach more Grand Slam finals and do better than I did then," Thiem exclusively told Vorarlberger Nachrichten.
World No. 8 Thiem has yet to reach a Grand Slam semi-final outside Roland Garros.
The Austrian fell just short of making the US Open semi-final last year as he suffered a heartbreaking US Open quarter-final loss against Nadal.
