Shelby Rogers earns Charleston WC, returning to action after a year
Following a knee injury she suffered at Indian Wells last year, the 26-year-old Shelby Rogers was forced to stay away from the court for a year, making her comeback at the Volvo Car Open in Charleston at the end of March. A former top-50 player and a two-time WTA finalist lives in Charleston and she earned a wild card and the opportunity to make a comeback at her favorite event. Shelby grew up at the Family Circle Tennis Center, training there since she was a kid and presenting flowers for 2001 Charleston champion Jennifer Capriati at the age of eight.
Back in 2017, Rogers was the quarter-finalist in Charleston after beating the top seed Madison Keys and she is hoping for another good run at home event after that knee injury that kept her away from the court for a year. Earlier that year, Shelby ousted world no. 4 Simona Halep at the Australian Open, winning seven Grand Slam matches in 2017 and playing in the third round at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open. She struggled with injury even before Indian Wells, tearing the muscle against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni at the Australian Open and skipping all the events until March when she suffered a more severe injury that ruined her progress for a year.
“I am beyond excited for the opportunity to compete again at the Volvo Car Open this April,” said Rogers. “Charleston is where it all began for me, so it is extra special to start my comeback here with the support and encouragement of my hometown, friends, and family.
