Zsombor Piros reflects on great performance against Philipp Kohlschreiber
World No. 371 Zsombor Piros may have fallen just short of making the biggest Davis Cup surprise of Friday's schedule but still he will never forget his clash against German Philipp Kohlschreiber.
The 19-year-old threatened to cause a big upset in the opening rubber of the Hungary versus Germany tie in Frankfurt but in the end lost 6-7 (8) 7-5 6-4 to the eight-time ATP champion.
"I think I played over my best today. It has been one of my greatest matches in life so far," Piros said post-match, per Tennis TourTalk Twitter.
Piros blew a set point on Kohlschreiber's serve in the eighth game and then one more set point on his serve in the following game as the German forced a tie-break -- where the Hungarian blew three consecutive set points, before converting his fourth to clinch the opener.
Kohlschreiber, ranked at No. 32 in the world, lost his serve early on in the second set but didn't panic after falling down 3-1 as he stole the set to force a decider.
Piros lost his serve in the fifth game but broke back immediately in the following game to make it all tied at 3-3.
Kohlschreiber kept his focus as he broke the Hungarian for the second time in the set in the ninth game and then made no mistake when serving out for the match in the following game.
Piros hit 33 winners, converted 3-of-10 of his break point chances but also lost his serve five times in two hours and 39 minutes of play.
Piros, the 2017 Australian Open boys champion, mainly plays at the Challenger and Futures level.
If Hungary wins the doubles rubber to reduce the deficit to 2-1, Piros will likely get a chance to play against 2018 Nitto ATP Finals champion Alexander Zverev in the fourth rubber.
