Elina Svitolina can help Gael Monfils a lot, says expert

After Novak Djokovic's loss in Indian Wells, a lot of players have good chances to reach the final on the top half. That's what the former world No. 25 Filippo Volandri said speaking on Sky Sport. "(Gael) Monfils is the man to beat but he often gets injured and we do not know if he will go far but I see him as a favourite on the top half. It depends on him, Gael often plays first with himself and then the opponent, he jokes with the crowd, he is very funny but sometimes that's not good. But considering the way he has been playing this year in general and in Indian Wells, he has a good shot. On the bottom half, there is a tougher competition featuring Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, John Isner who served very well here in his first two matches."

On how Monfils can benefit from Elina Svitolina's advice, Volandri added: "She is not the first girlfriend as a tennis player for Gael. People often say that female players mature earlier than male players so she can help him."

On Roger Federer saying that Novak Djokovic didn't have time to speak with him about the ATP Chief Executive Chris Kermode leaving the board late this year, Volandri concluded: "We should talk for many minutes about it. But the players' council is made up of six people - three players, three people who take in charge of tournaments. In order to find someone who replaces Kermode, four people out of six need to agree with it. So that's difficult."

Volandri finally commented on the importance of tactics: "At this level, the top players work a lot on tactics. Novak Djokovic has been working with the strategy analyst Craig O'Shannessy and they work closely on it."
