Former no. 11 to headline Los Cabos field in July

The ATP 250 event in Los Cabos is the sixth strongest in the calendar in this category in terms of the Total Financial Commitment, serving as the last preparation for the North American Masters 1000 events in Montreal and Cincinnati. Established in 2016, the Abierto de Tenis Mifel presentado por Cinemex saw three editions so far, with Ivo Karlovic, Sam Querrey and Fabio Fognini taking places on the title winners list. A year ago, Fognini managed to overcome a slow start of the tournament and go all the way to lift the eighth ATP title and the first outside clay, toppling Juan Martin del Potro 6-4, 6-2 in 80 minutes to become the third champion of this attractive event.

The fourth edition takes place between July 29 - August 3 and the organizers have announced the first player to compete for the title, with Diego Schwartzman entering the main draw for the first time. The Buenos Aires native has been ranked in the top-100 for almost five years and he never left the top-30 after the US Open 2017, improving his game on hard courts and reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open and the semi-final in Antwerp last year. Winning the first ATP 500 crown in Rio de Janeiro, Diego was also the only player to take away a set from Rafael Nadal during the Roland Garros in the encounter that lasted three hours and 42 minutes, earning ten Grand Slam wins in the previous season and competing on a stable level so far in the first two months of 2019.

The organizers of Los Cabos will add more names in the following months and we should expect a decent field with all those who are not ready to chase 500 ATP points in Washington against the stronger rivals.
