Getting to know Veronika Kudermetova
It might have been a tough, heavy competitive tournament for Veronika Kudermetova, but the 21 year old Russian player did her best at the Abierto Zapopan in Guadalajara, Mexico. She played a few veterans and some qualifiers, stayed focused in the final to defeat Marie bouzkova 6-2, 6-0 for her maiden career title. After Battling with no. 1 Kristyna Pliskova in three sets and going another two matches where she'd lost a set, the Russian grew stronger with every match. She produced 5 aces and struggled to save all six break points in the second set. But she can attribute her win of her maiden title to her hard fought performances in the past.
Kudermetova has won three doubles in the WTA 125K series and four doubles challengers. It was on the ITF Women's Circuit that she'd accumulate four singles and 16 doubles titles in her way to improving her quality of play on the WTA tour. It was six years ago that Kudermetova can't forget winning her first $50,000 tournament at the 2013 Kazan Summer Cup. She had partnered with Evgeniya Rodina to defeat Alexandra Artamonova and Martina Borecka in the final. The following year Kudermetova would feel proud to play for the 2014 Russian Fed Cup even though she lost to Australia's Samantha Stosur in their first World Group round tie.
Every player says that they would like to even be in a grand slam tournament and Kudermetova was no different, getting her wish and making her debut at the 2017 Australian Open. Despite losing in the first qualifying round it prepared her for other tournaments and she was fortunate enough to qualify also for the 2019 Australian Open's main draw. She had lost to American Sofia Kenin in the opening round but this gave her hope and confidence that she would extend her performances to other tournaments.
In doubles, the young Russian had great experience of partnering with Sabrina Santamaria toplay opposite the team of Belinda Bencic and Donna Vekic. They had pulled out their 'A' game to defeat this very experienced team of Bencic and Vekic where together the ladies held 5 WTA singles titles. Kudermetova and Santamaria weren't so fortunate when it came to their second round opponents, Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka who they bowed to in straight sets 7-6, 6-2. She believed in herself and at the Abierto Zapopan she gave a determined and successful performance in Guadalajara where she happily walked off with her first title. It's in hope that she can keep up her feisty and gritty play at the next tournament - The Miami Open.
