Juan Martin del Potro withdraws from Miami Masters
As expected, Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro has withdrawn from the Miami Open.
The Argentinian kicked off his 2019 campaign at the Delray Beach Open last month as that was his first tournament since fracturing his kneecap at the Rolex Shanghai Masters in October.
The 30-year-old made the Delray Beach quarter-final, before losing to American Mackenzie McDonald.
Del Potro then withdrew from the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco and BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells as he underwent a regenerative therapy treatment on his knee.
The Argentinian won it all in Acapulco and Indian Wells a year ago.
Del Potro, who debuted at the Miami Masters in 2007, has played at the tournament 10 times so far in his career.
The Argentinian twice made the semi-final at the Miami event, in 2009 and 2018.
The 30-year-old remains hopeful that he will return to Miami next year.
"Unfortunately, I won’t be able to play in Miami this year. Looking forward to coming back in 2020," del Potro announced on Twitter.
Meanwhile, a place in the Miami main draw has opened for Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic following the withdrawal of del Potro.
Tipsarevic, 34, is set to make his eighth Miami main draw appearance.
The former world No. 8 hasn't played at the Miami event since 2013.
The 34-year-old twice made the Miami quarter-final, in 2008 and 2012.
The Miami Open has been scheduled to be held from March 20-31.
