Indian Wells: Elina Svitolina ends Vondrousova's run to reach SF

Sixth seed Elina Svitolina avoided becoming yet another victim of Marketa Vondrousova at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Wednesday. The Ukrainian won their quarterfinal 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semifinal in the bottom-half of the women's singles draw. This is the first time that Svitolina has reached the semifinal of the BNP Paribas Open.

Vondrousova looked like she had carried over the form that had seen her upset the likes of Simona Halep (in the fourth round) but Svitolina asserted her mien after regrouping to win the second set. The two exchanged service breaks in thr deciding set but when push came to shove, Svitolina proved her mettle decisively.

In her on-court interview after her win, a relieved Svitolina said, "The key was today just fighting for every ball and just trying to put one extra ball at the net. It was not a perfect match for me, but I was fighting." She added, "I had to really stay in the match and try to put one extra ball. In the end, this is what brought me and what gave me the chance. I took it in the end to win the match."

She next faces Bianca Andreescu, who romped over 20th seed Garbine Muguruza in their quarterfinal played earlier on the day. The Canadian won 6-0, 6-1 against the Spaniard. In beating Vondrousova, Svitolina also staved off what would have been an all-teenager's match-up between the 18two-year-old Andreescu and the 19-year-old Vondrousova. It will be 

Following this win, Svitolina will re-enter the top five of the WTA singles rankings.
