'Laver Cup is a nice exhibition event held by Federer' -Davis Cup organizer

In an interview to W Radio, the former player Galo Blanco commented on his role as a Davis Cup organizer. The Spaniard feels confident that the tournament will turn successful: "We have been working hard and a lot to make everyone understand how the format works and we will see what happens. We are very excited. The previous format had committed players for four weeks a year which means eight weeks because it takes one extra week per each tie to prepare. So it was tougher for players, especially when playing far away ties. We are reducing the calendar to two weeks and someone just has to play the Madrid finals. We had problems with the date, November 24 is a little late as they need time to prepare for Australia", said Blanco.

He also commented on the Laver Cup, which "is an exhibition tournament held by Federer, which is nice and ATP Cup is similar to what we do but it has nothing to see. In Davis Cup, you play for your country and federation. All this money that Kosmos is investing for players and federations is good because the federations will earn more, which is not done in the ATP Cup."

He concluded: "All the criticism needs to be useful in order to hold a better event. It was about the date, Federer had believed we would host it in September, but it will not happen per now. We are giving our best."

The Spanish Tennis Federation member Tomas Carbonell commented on the new Davis Cup format. "You needed this change, Rafael definitely wanted it. Madrid was among the candidates for hosting it for two years. Pique is a professional, football champion and he wants the best for tennis and his country."
