Marat Safin: 'Federer is the best. Djokovic and the rest play the same!'

In an interview to Socrates Magazine, the two-time Major winner Marat Safin criticized the men's tennis. "If I look at Tomas Berdych, Grigor Dimitrov or Milos Raonic, everyone plays the same tennis", said the Russian. "Sometimes you even get confused because they are the same. It's boring and that's not good for the general development of the sport. In truth, they do not play at all, they mostly play as a robot. The motto is to always want to hit the ball as strong as possible and then you see what comes out."

Safin also criticized some other players: "The best players like Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka play in the same way. Where are the differences? For me, there aren't."

Safin only defended one player, Roger Federer. "He uses the slice, he serves and volleys, so he stays unpredictable. He plays with his head. Many players can think they are as good as Federer, but in the end, no opponent can equal him. He is the best player ever by far. He played a cat and mouse game with me. I always had to run as much as possible, but I almost never made it. He has always been a nightmare."

Safin only beat Federer twice out of 12 meetings: at 2002 Moscow and 2005 Australian Open semifinals. On Federer and Nadal dominance, last year Safin said: "'How it’s possible that one is 36 years old and the other 31 and they’re still winning and crushing everybody and chopping everybody off. They are superstars. What’s wrong with the juniors? They need to start to bite already,'
