Mikaela Shiffrin: 'Roger Federer was happy, smiley and easy to talk to'

In an interview to CNN, the American skier Mikaela Shiffrin recalled her meeting with Roger Federer during a Barilla event last year in Chicago during the Laver Cup. "Maybe I got him on a good day, but he was kind, he was engaged with every single person that he spoke to", admitted Shiffrin. "He was happy and smiley and easy to talk to. He put the effort in to make it easy. It was so cool for me to see that it's possible to be an athlete of his caliber and to be more elegant and more generous and nicer than what you expect. To see that he can still maintain this mature and modest attitude, I'm like, 'What is everybody else doing?'"

Shiffrin added: "I wasn't disappointed. Actually I was really flattered. I was incredibly honored that two of the greatest athletes in our sport said that they thought I could win in all events. The reason I made this post was because they both also said they thought essentially that I was wrong in making my decision and I have reasons that maybe they didn't consider in making my decision."

Shiffrin feels satisfied with her physical and mental shape: "I'm a little bit fresher going into these races. It almost feels like a second start to the world championships", concluded Shiffrin, one of the greatest skiing champions.
