Secret combinations and a sprinkle of junk helps Bianca Andreescu get wins
"I really needed a moment to soak this all in," Bianca Andreescu excitingly said after her win over Elina Svitolina at Indian Wells. But her moments were adding up and she'd gone from being ranked no. 152 at the beginning of this 2019 season to now in the top 30s. It appears the Indian Wells tournament wasn't only a wild card away but her good luck charm giving Andreescu the chance to defeat player after player; not so easy at times but yet accomplishing her goal as an end result.
She's gotten her way over many highly competitive playes starting from the Mexican Open through to the Miami Open accumulating nearly a dozen straight wins to date. Muguruza, Svitolina, Cibulkova and Begu twice. She has evened the games by winning over Sofia Kenin when she's gotten defeated by her in the semis of the Mexican Open. This isn't to mention her latest feat of winning a title over Angelique Kerber at Indian Wells and then played a tough and difficult fashion to scrape a win from her again at the Round of 32 in Miami.
Andreescu has great maturity on court more than her 18 years and has no shame to any part of her game able to create more change ups than a baseball pitcher on the mound. She can give it to you fast, slow and slicing, blasting or soft. The technique of angled cross courting has worked brilliantly for her and she has proven time and again that she's dangerous when she's grabbing point after point or more so if she's losing...she can be lethal.
The Canadian's third round match with Angelique Kerber at Miami was the second time playing her in a week. This was for both emotionally difficult and physically draining. It was exhausting for Andreescu as she was trying for another win and stressful for Kerber who was trying to win this grudge match since she'd already lost in the final and title at Indian Wells. Andreescu was down 0-2 in the first set but growled and crawled up to win 10 games and the opening set 6-4. The tenn was leading 4-1 in the second but the defiant Kerber wouldn't be dealt a bad hand again and won 5 games to win the second set 6-4. The deciding set was a drag-out fight to the finish. But not without some medical time outs by the teen whose body was taking a brutal muscle beating. Bianca Andreescu still had the ability to move Kerber around and push her to the baseline to create junk shots and acute angles. She came through to win the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. There was a bit of controversy as the two went to shake hands with Kerber saying she was 'the biggest drama queen ever.'
It was Andreescu's Round of 16 match with Anett Kontaveit was the draw that broke down the Canadian's resistance. She needed a few medical time outs again what looks like a shoulder ailment and possibly her back. She had lost the first set 1-6 and in the second down 0-2. It wasn't even an hour and Andresscu knew she couldn't go on. "I have played so many matches. I guess this is just a way of my body telling me that it's had enough," she'd said. The Canadian teen was being real and admitted that "It's disappointing, but it's part of the sport." She has decided to withdraw from the Charleston Open next month to get a deserved rest. She leaves as a winner despite the retirement and her next tournament most possibly won't be any different than the last with much ingredients to her game enough to give any opponent tough and defiant competition.
