Denis Shapovalov: 'Roger Federer, Djokovic, Nadal force me to work harder'
In an interview at the Barcelona Open Denis Shapovalov commented on how coinciding with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic motivates him to give his best. "We are yet to achieve something similar", said the 19-year-old. "That they are there, at the top of the ranking, forces me to work with a greater intensity, to improve myself. And this is good". Can he defeat them? "Why not? Everything is possible. When we head to the court, we all look for the same: win. "
On Nadal, Shapovalov added: "He is the best in history on clay. No one is more complete than him. I think it is not necessary to emphasize how much he has done for tennis. I admire him deeply."
He finally commented on the Next Generation group: "What is happening is exciting. Several young tennis players are there and, honestly, I believe that it is the best thing that could happen to this sport. We must continue to 'grow' but the bases are set."
Shapovalov feels excited to compete in Barcelona: "I hope for the best in this tournament. The clay is not strange to me since in Canada it is very common. I'm good on it and it's a surface I like. I know how important this tournament is. It is historic and it has an enormous prestige on the tour. All the people are very kind. They take care that everything is ready. I feel at home. I'm delighted."
