Hyeon Chung's injury-plagued year continues as he pulls out of Barcelona

Rising South-Korean star Hyeon Chung's injury-plagued season continues as he has picked up yet another tournament withdrawal after pulling out of the Barcelona Open.

The 22-year-old won't be making his third appearance on the clay of Barcelona as a back issue forced him to withdraw from Barcelona and delay the opening of his 2019 clay-court campaign.

The South-Korean debuted at the Barcelona events three years ago in 2016, when he suffered a straight-set first-round defeat against Tunisian Malek Jaziri.

Chung had to earn a place in the Barcelona main draw a year later as he made it past the qualifying event before reaching the quarter-final at the tournament.

The South-Korean, who won a total of five matches in Barcelona two years ago, stunned German Alexander Zverev in the round-of-16 before falling to eventual champion Rafael Nadal in the quarter-final.

Chung, a former world No. 19, hasn't played since Rotterdam, where he suffered a first round loss at the hands of Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Overall, the South-Korean has played only four tournaments so far this season, picking up only one win and four losses.

The 22-year-old didn't have a memorable clay season last year, having played only two tournaments during the clay season.

It remains to be seen when will Chung, now ranked at No. 124 in the world, return to competitive action.

2018 Australian Open semi-finalist Chung will be replaced by a lucky loser in the Barcelona main draw.
