Roger Federer: 'I cried when my two daughters were born'
In a recent interview, Roger Federer recalled when his two daughters Myla and Charlene were born in August 2009. The Basel native felt very emotional. "It was tears of joy. I cried before Mirka went to the hospital, during and after birth. I am happy to have left my emotions because thank to it I will always remember such a special and big moment for me", said the 20-time Grand Slam winner.
But Federer cries when he plays tennis too. He was destroyed when he lost to Tommy Haas in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. "I went to a corner like a kid and I did not manage to stop crying for a long time. It left a mark on me." The day after Federer would lose to the Frenchman Arnaud Di Pasquale. "I lost again and I cried all the day again. During the same night, I met Mirka and I gave her the first kiss, so it went well!"
He also had hard matches against his friend and countryman Marco Chiudinelli. "When I was playing him in the junior days, we cried all the time! Both when I was winning and losing."
In an interview to El Pais, the Australian legend Rod Laver said: "Roger is the second best player in the world on clay, after Nadal. Nadal was unusually brilliant on clay. For Roger it must have been hard to face someone a bit better, having to go through him. Personally, tennis gave me a lot. In general, the ultimate confidence in life. It also gave me memories, friendships, the feeling that back in the day we were a team. Tennis and sport teach you on a consistent basis."
